“When you’re feeling stuck in any data storytelling project, remember your ‘why.’”

As a Master Facilitator, Pia is committed to guiding learners to find and be clear about their ‘why,’ so that questions like ‘what’ and ‘how’ feel less overwhelming and fall more easily into place.

Before joining StoryIQ, Pia worked as a lawyer in London, advising international companies on corporate and intellectual property law matters. She then built her expertise on the international schools market in East Asia, harnessing the power of quantitative and qualitative data to support schools, education investors, and suppliers in developing their growth strategies in the region.

Pia has also taught business communication courses at the University of Asia and the Pacific and at the data science education non-profit For The Women Foundation.

Interview with Pia

Inclusive and enthusiastic!
To keep sessions engaging, I like to use a lot of examples, including ones from everyday life that we might not consider as ‘data.’ I also encourage learners to share examples from their own experiences. All these, I believe, help bring data storytelling concepts to life. And concepts brought to life are more memorable and easier to apply in everyday practice, right?
Having worked in international teams, I have developed an appreciation for different learning and communication styles. This is why I am constantly looking for ways to engage learners in the StoryIQ classroom – for example, providing opportunities for big group discussions for more outgoing learners and digital bulletin boards like Padlet for more reserved learners.
I once heard technology described as a bridge, and I think its use in virtual training is a good illustration of that! With virtual training, we can reach learners from anywhere with an internet connection, regardless of time zones, geographical barriers, or physical limitations.
For learners, in-person training can offer a more focused learning atmosphere because there are fewer distractions. As the facilitator, I like that I can see learners’ body language and non-verbal feedback more easily and adapt more quickly!
Data Storytelling for Business! I love how it hammers on the importance of knowing your ‘why’ — what the purpose of your project is, to whom you are presenting it, and what you want them to do after. From experience, knowing this can save you a lot of time (and from all sorts of professional heartbreaks). So, I am happy to be able to share with learners a framework for knowing their ‘why’.
These days, I have been casually building up my Korean language skills, so I can be more confident in ordering food from Korean restaurants and street food vendors (Food is a strong motivator, clearly!). I also enjoy swimming and attending Lagree fitness classes, which all help me spend time away from my desk.
