How could data science and machine learning be used to improve Santa’s core operations? Below are some initial ideas:
• Santa sits on a HUGE amount of data from past Christmases. Behavioral ‘naughty or nice’ data is highly sensitive and confidential, so I am assuming this data is stored in an on-premise cloud in the North Pole. Gift deployment therefore should be fully data driven, with clustering techniques such as PCA used to segment children into broad behavioral categories.
• Whilst children enjoy writing letters to Santa, unfortunately this practice needs to be brought into the digital age. As a first step, I recommend capturing gift preferences via AI powered chat support at Santa.com. The longer-term plan however, is to deploy mass IOT in all children’s rooms, then leverage NLP, video and image recognition to automatically classify child behavior into varying strata of ‘good’ and ‘bad’.
• Santa’s HR hasn’t been successful in ending the systemic annual bullying of Rudolph, so I recommend retiring the entire team of reindeer altogether. Instead, a self-driving sleigh should be developed in collaboration with Tesla.
